LRR News
July 10, 2008: For those of you located in Frederick County, MD, there's a great way to help LRR and a Kid Hero, Anna (age 6). For the past two years instead of receiving birthday presents from her friends, Anna has been collecting donations of leashes, toys, and treats for LRR. On Saturday September 6th (NOTE: Date has been moved) Anna will be at the Francis Scott Key Mall in Frederick County with Kids Are Heroes to raise funds for each Kid Hero's charity including LRR. You can read more information about Anna and the event here. Thank you, Anna, you are a hero to all our labs!May 4, 2008: There's still time to send us photos of your LRR lab for our 2009 calendar contest! Think your LRR dog is the cutest of them all? Then get our your camera and prove it! We're currently accepting entries for our 2009 LRR Calendar Contest! Photos of LRR-adopted dogs will be accepted through May 15th, and contest winners will be announced later this year.
March 30, 2008: In the spirit of Bite Prevention Week, on March 25th an LRR representative and adopted dog visited with King Solomon's Christian Academy in Sterling, VA and presented a hands-on class to approximately 50 preschool children titled May I Pet Your Dog? emphasizing safe interaction with dogs. The children received coloring books and the school received a book for their library by the same name as the class by Stephanie Calmenson. LRR hopes to continue to offer this class. Please contact us if you are interested in us visiting your elementary school, preschool or day camp in the DC metro area. Read more on our Community Outreach page!
March 1, 2008: Our new 15th Anniversary tee-shirts are now available in our store! We only have a limited number of shirts, so get yours before they're all gone!
November 24, 2007: Over in our Happy Tails section we've just added a touching story about Chessie, an LRR dog who was adopted by a local police department and became an instant success, with hundreds of drug busts to her name. When it was time for her to retire, she was adopted by her partner/handler, and was part of his family until she passed away last month.
November 11, 2007: We've added a new Community Outreach page in our About LRR section, discussing many of the ways LRR helps dogs in our community. Check it out!
July 27, 2007: LRR is once again able to accept a limited number of owner give-ups. If you can no longer care for your lab, and you live in our service area, please e-mail labgab@lrr.org or call the Lab Line at 301-868-3524.
Foster Homes Needed!
With the Labrador Retriever being one of the most popular breeds, it is no surprise that there are more labs to rescue than many other breeds. Not a day goes by that LRR doesn't receive a number of phone calls begging us to take an owner give-up, a shelter dog, or a stray whose owners cannot be found. Often, we must put dogs on waiting lists or reluctantly turn them away simply because we don't have a foster home available. Our foster homes are our most important link in our rescue chain. Without their hard work and assistance, we could not save, rehabilitate and place these homeless labs.
Click here to find out more about what's involved in fostering, and for information on how to become an LRR foster home. LRR especially needs foster homes in Central PA -- York, Dauphin, Lebanon, Lancaster, and Berks counties. If you can't foster, click here to find out about other ways you can help.
