Xena
Xena, a 4 year old black lab/flat coat mix, was picked up running at large by Prince George's County Animal Control and taken to the shelter. When she was not claimed or adopted, her outlook was grim. But, her sweet and attentive personality stole the hearts of LRR volunteers and she came into our system. Searching for an appropriate name for her, we noted her beautiful long black "hair" and her penchant for leading a nomadic life. Xena was suggested and seemed to stick. As if to rise to being the Warrior Princess, she showed her foster homes that she was rather proud and more interested in attention from people than other dogs. She also was very gentle with children. We knew she would make a fine family pet for someone who would accept a "long haired lab". Fortunately, it didn't take long before such a family became approved. Xena proved herself to be wonderful with their new baby, and soon the adoption was done. Follow-up calls noted that she was settling in very well and her new Mom was thrilled that she walked well enough on a leash that she could take Xena and the baby for a stroll together. Recently, we received this update on life with Xena:
I've been meaning to write to you about our Xena, whom we adopted this past October. She's doing great! She's adjusted very well to the new house and baby (the baby thinks she's pretty cool, too, although she is very wary of the baby's walker.) Xena's not sure that she likes a mobile rugrat chasing her about the house, but she's tolerating it well. She is set on her daily routine of walk, food, naps, petting and combing. God forbid if something is postponed. =) She is still very affectionate, but more secure than she was in the beginning. Thankfully, her confidence is growing. Thanks again for a great dog companion.
