Becoming An LRR Foster Home

Becoming a foster home can be a very rewarding experience. Every time you foster a Lab, you're giving it a second chance at life. Plus, it gives you a chance to meet, train, and love many dogs. Even though your time with each will be brief, it will leave a lasting impression on you. If you are interested in becoming a foster home, follow these steps:

Read our "Introduction to Foster Homes". This document explains what it means to be a foster home, how dogs will be provided to you, and what is expected of you.

Read "My Month With Max". This is a story about a foster home's first experience with fostering.

Read "Before You Get A Dog" which discusses the right and wrong reasons for wanting a dog, and the responsibilities of dog ownership.

Read "Questions To Ask Yourself Before Getting A Lab" to learn more about what's involved in owning a Lab (or in the case of fostering, having one in your home).

Read "What Is An Animal Rescue Organization?" to understand more about rescues.

Read the terms and conditions of our adoption contract. Although you are fostering rather than adopting, many of the same conditions apply.

Complete an adoption application in its entirety and sign and return the application to LRR. We use the same application for foster and adoptive homes. If you rent, submit to us written permission from your landlord to be a foster home for dogs.

Make sure your current pets are up to date on all vaccinations, especially rabies, dhlpp, and bordatella.

After we have evaluated your application a telephone interview may be conducted, followed by a house check by an LRR volunteer. If you are approved, you will receive an LRR foster home contract to read, sign, and return. Next you will participate in an LRR foster home orientation, and will be given your first foster Lab!

Once you have been approved, you should purchase a crate for the foster lab if you do not already have one available.
