Happy Tails for Polly

February 26, 2010

Hello again- I checked in with you about a year ago with my good news on a Rally title, this year I thought I would let you know that I am now a therapy dog.

Yes, I, Polly Wolly Doodle, visit nursing homes to brighten other people’s days.

You must be thinking “who would have thought.” I had my first visit last week and mom was super proud of me. I was so calm, and sat next to the residents and looked up at them longingly. I was a big hit! I get to wear bandanas, hats and other decorations for the holidays. I have attached a few pictures of me in my St. Patty’s day garb. Do humans really think this is cute?

Until next time- have a great day!

Hello everyone! It’s Polly Wolly Doodle RN CGC

My mom and dad are shouting with joy. I finished my AKC Rally Novice title this weekend with a score of 92/100. I feel great to have made everyone so proud. I wonder what I will get to try next.

Whoever said you can’t teach “old dogs new tricks” has never tried.

They said that the spirit was gone in my eyes when I arrived at LRR. They were wrong, it was not gone, just dim. My extended stay with all the LRR foster homes helped me be happy with my life again. I really don’t want to talk about my life as a Puppy Mill mom, but if you care to read about it on your own you can visit websites and see what a horrible place it is.

I want to live in the present. I love my mom, dad, LRR brothers and grandpa. I am coming around to my nephew, I think he will be fun soon too. When I came to my home, I was a foster. We can all see how that ended. Mom, Dad and Grandpa taught me to be a retrieving machine. I mean machine. Don’t be fooled by my “mommy figure”, I can outrun and out-retrieve any of those labs with the girlish figures.

When I first got to my home, we had times of “forced fun.” We would go for car rides to get McD’s. Mom knew that food was the quickest way to my heart. I liked to go up stairs and lay on the dog beds up in the bedroom. Then Mom put up a baby gate so I had to be downstairs. Eventually they noticed me peeking around the corners to see what was going on. I realized they do pretty fun things and came into the room more and more.

I went to obedience school, not because I was out of control like my brother Rusty or needed training, but because it was a great place. People would be nice to me and there were lots of other dogs there, I am the most comfortable around dogs. I went from a 6-year old that did not speak English, to a very well responding girl now. Mom continues to take me and we start competing next month in Rally Novice. I earned my first “leg”, I don’t know what that means, but Mom was thrilled. I thought I already had 4 legs?

I do have a small slipper problem. Or rather it is my parents’ problem. I love slippers. I love to chew on them. My mom has lost countless pairs of slippers in the past 2 years.

Before you buy a puppy from a pet store, please think of where that puppy came from. There are thousands of mommies out in the world making puppies for the pet stores. Please consider going to your local animal shelter or SPCA and adopting. Us mommies rarely ever get to live the good life, so please help stop the puppy mills.
